We are living in an era of immense growth opportunities… where every player has a chance to stand out from the rest and showcase their incredible potential to their clientele. The recent announcements by the government of building infrastructure projects across the length and breadth of the country are significant indicators of a renaissance in the construction sector and its allied segments. Multimodal has been one of the potential harbingers of growth for the country and has notably been gaining due attention from policymakers. With the right projects & plans in place, Steelion is ready to lead this growth trajectory with some of the logistics parks projects already in the making.
At a recently held conference, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, informed investors and other stakeholders that the setting up of Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) at strategic locations in the country would bring down India’s logistics costs and help boost the national economy. “This will reduce our imports, increase our exports and thus help us realize the Prime Minister’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
Looking at the promising growth potential, the government decided to set up as many as 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks, at carefully chosen locations, at a total capital cost of Rs.50,000 crore. The MMLPs has been conceptualized to enable seamless intermodal freight movement and offer multiple functionalities such as freight aggregation and distribution. Storage and warehousing solutions and value-added services such as customs clearances and IT services will also be provided to users. Chennai is among the first cities in this network of MMLPs, to be chosen for implementation.
Logistics Parks are under construction in Assam, Nagpur, and Chennai, which will be functional shortly, as informed by government officials. The Pre-Project preparation for MMLP is in the advanced stages, with bids already invited for MMLPs in Nagpur and Chennai, and bids for MMLPs in Bangalore and Indore will be invited in the next 2–3 months. MoUs have been signed with JNPT, Chennai Port Trust, and the governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana have been signed for the development of MMLPs.
Southern states are getting a lot of traction lately in the scheme of things, encompassing immense potential. For instance, the news of Tamil Nadu’s first multimodal logistics park (MMLP), planned at Mappedu in Tiruvallur, has been sending positive signals in Chennai’s real estate circles. Recently, an MoU was signed for the construction of the 158-acre park between the state-owned Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) arm National Highway Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML). To be built under the public-private partnership model between TIDCO, NHLML, and the Chennai Port Trust with an investment of Rs1,200 crore, this mega project is expected to create employment for an estimated 10,000 workers and significantly spur the ancillary warehousing and cold storage facilities segments.
This MMLP at Tiruvallur will have an edge as it will be linked to the established industrial clusters of Sriperumbudur – a premier automotive manufacturing hub, Pillaipakkam, and Oragadam. Besides being nearer to the CPRR (Chennai Peripheral Ring Road), Chennai airport, and seaports, the MMLP is expected to house a host of modern facilities, including a freight terminal with rail and road links, large storage capacity, as well as advanced machinery and mover equipment to handle an increase in cargo.
Having already established our expanse in the Southern markets, this developmental landscape augurs well for us at Steelion. Our upcoming smart logistics hub in Tiruppur is backed by advanced technology and sustainability. With the government’s concerted thrust on expanding the multimodal logistics landscape and allied infrastructure such as logistics parks, players like us have incredible opportunities to bring a paradigm shift in developing new-age logistics infrastructure, which not only boosts the overall business sentiments of the country but is also sustainable and tech-savvy in nature. As hailed by many experts, it is the right time to explore this highly vibrant industry growth story which is ably strengthened by government policy interventions.
